Sai Kung - The "Back Garden of Hong Kong"

Share

This leisurely and immersive excursion offers an off the beaten track experience starting with a ride on the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) to Tseung Kwan O, a new town in the northern tip of the New Territories. Here you’ll sample a variety of dim sum at the Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan restaurant, reputed to be the “dim sum specialist” and one of the cheapest Michelin-starred restaurants in the world! (As this is a very popular restaurant and does not accept reservations, please expect a short wait time.)

Afterwards, hop on a double-decker public bus for a scenic ride along the resplendent Sai Kung peninsula to Sai Kung Old Town for a leisurely visit.

The name “Sai Kung” dates back to the early days of the Ming Dynasty and means “tributes from the West”. Known as the “Back Garden” of Hong Kong, Sai Kung is located in the eastern coastal area of the New Territories and is renowned for its beautiful scenery and quaint fishing villages. Originally a fishing harbour where fishermen still gather, Sai Kung Old Town’s harbour is now a typhoon shelter where a busy floating seafood market supplies the al fresco waterfront eateries. Make sure to have your camera – this area is a haven for photographers or just rubbing shoulders with the locals!

While the former fishing village has a reputation for being a laid-back enclave, there is a lot more going on than initially meets the eye. Over time, the town has become a shopping destination with shops offering an unexpected assortment of knickknacks, clothes and other things you never knew you needed!

For a true taste of Hong Kong, stroll through the many seafood stalls and restaurants along the promenade, more commonly referred to as “Seafood Street”, and peer over the edge of the harbour where you’ll find myriad junk boats hawking fresh-caught fish and seafood. Sai Kung Old Town’s main drag, See Cheung Street, is lined with vendors selling freshly-pressed juice and traditional Hong Kong snacks which you will have the opportunity to try!

After soaking up the atmospheric environment, return to the city by public minibus.
