3-day cultural experiences in Loikaw

Share

Discover the hidden tribes of Loikaw and their unique cultures. Loikaw is the capital of Kayah State, one of the least visited areas of the country but one rich in ethnic heritage. These picturesque hills are home to many of Myanmar’s indigenous hill tribes.

On this 3-day journey, depart from Yangon and fly to Loikaw. Start your sightseeing with fun insights into local life and culture in Hta Nee La Leh, a Kayah (also known as Padaung) community. Hop aboard an ox-driven cart to tour the Kayhtoebo site and Hunting Shrine, where you will learn about local beliefs and spiritual life. Take your time to pay visits to homes in the village where you can meet locals and artisans and learn about their lifestyle. Proceed to Thirimingala Pagoda (Taung Kwe Zedi) before sunset. The steep climb up is well worth it for the view over the city and the nearby hills.

On the next morning, drive 45 minutes to the Kayan villages of Pan Pet where you will meet the famous Kayan women with elongated necks. Some elder women still wear the traditional brass rings although the tradition has fallen out of fashion with many younger generations. From there, transfer to Pemsong hamlet and enjoy a moderately challenging trek through shady forest. A highlight of the trip is the original settlement of Pan Pet, perched on a mountaintop where evidence of past habitation is still visible. This is considered one of the first Kayan settlements of Kayah state. Enjoy a packed lunch on this site before continuing the trek which ends in Rang Ku hamlet. Try to learn a few words in the Kayah language while interacting with the friendly locals and visit the souvenir shops filled with interesting local handicrafts.

Transfer to Taunggyi on the last day. On the journey, stop at a Pa-O village and large monastery before capping of your tour with a visit to the Kakku pagoda complex.
