Share

Journey through Hpa An – a distinctive rural city and one of the most beautiful little towns, least visit by tourist in Karen State of Myanmar.

While Hpa An remains unheard of to the vast majority of the world, it is home to an abundance of fascinating and interesting sites, including amazing natural caves like Kawkoon Cave and Bayinyi Cave and Thanlwin River.

The villages in Hpa An are surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges and emerald green fields. Most of the local community are Theravada Buddhists who also practice animism. While walking around the villages, you will get to know not only the simple and peaceful life of always smiling Kayin people but also their traditions and different beliefs. Take your chance to try the authentic home cooked food arranged by the local community at one of the houses in the village.

Continuing your journey just two hours drive from Hpa An is a well-known destination, Mawlamyaing. To reach the town, take a boat from Hpa An along the Thanlwin river to enjoy the beautiful scenery, natural mountains and hills. Mawlamyaing, an ancient capital of Mon State, is the third largest city of the country and was used to be the main trading centre and seaport in southeastern Burma.

The remarkable highlight of this river journey is a stop at a small village along the river to visit the picturesque U Nar Auk Monastery which houses fantastic reliefs displaying the history of Buddhas life. The shrines and monastery was built over a century ago by U Nar Auk and the other personalities from Kawhnat and Kadow villages, famed in their days for their wealth and generosity. It is a-must-to-visit for its incompatible history and variety of artistic works with the mix of traditional and non-conforming architectural style of the structures.
