discover hidden tribal Kayin villages during a walking tour in Hpa An

Share

Discover Hpa An’s hidden tribes and unique Kayin villages, each with their different beliefs, lifestyles, cultures and traditions.

From your hotel in Hpa An, drive out to the first village of Kawkameik where you will be led to the walking trail. Stroll around the village and learn about the local lifestyle. Continue on to Lakana Village, a typical village that boasts surprisingly green and clean surroundings. You will witness a lot of plantations and the village itself is surrounded by the picturesque mountain ranges. After passing through rubber plantations, arrive at Thalaku Village, also called Young Htone Village, which literally means “knot of hair”. This small village has many stories to share and is the highlight of this walking tour.

The villagers are vegetarian and hold unique beliefs, worshipping a local hermit and following his way. For them, his speeches are the rules of the village. For instance, wearing underwear is prohibited in the village for the locals believe that it is a sin. The villagers farm fulltime for their livelihood. Men still wear a knot of hair on top of their heads (young htone) and both genders wear authentic Kayin costumes (thin daing and jat kop), while traditional houses are made of palm leaves, bamboo and wood.

A packed lunch will be arranged at one of the local houses in Lakana Village. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Hpa An.
