between worlds: A northwest sail to un-spoilt land

Share

One of the most untouched parts of the country, Palk Bay is situated between India and Sri Lanka in a highly strategic area featuring pristine beaches and deserted islands. In this magical place, only a yacht is allowed to sail the sea. Embark for a week of discovery, surrounded by luscious landscapes and Sri Lankan culture. This completely new sailing adventure is ideal for those looking to indulge in both comfort and culture.

Board the catamaran at Tailaimannar and sail from the pier to the wonderful island of Iranitivu while soaking up the scenery before arriving at the best spot to drop anchor in the crystal blue waters. Wake up to a beautiful day on the ocean and relax or take a swim after a scrumptious breakfast onboard. The crew will sail to Palitivu where a short stopover will be organised to enjoy a typical local lunch. Next, head toward the deserted sand banks of Jaffna during a 2-hour sail and take a dinghy to explore the famous Jaffna town. Although a recent addition to the tourist itinerary, this once war-torn city is slowly but positively transforming into a tourist hotspot. One can never run out of things-to-do in this charming city located in the isolated northern peninsula amidst the lush foliage and palms. Another distinctive feature is the peninsula’s incorporation of the western, eastern and northern coastal lines, which offers the chance to observe both the sunrise and sunset while relishing the shallow baby, blue waters and unspoilt beaches.

Jaffna is an exhilarating place throughout the year, however we suggest visiting during the month of August to experience the famed annual Nallur Kovil Festival. Another significant landscape of the Jaffna Peninsula is the Jaffna Fort, which is well renowned as one of Asia’s best examples of Dutch fortifications.

On the voyage’s fourth day, sail three hours to arrive at the picturesque Delft Island where horses and ponies roam freely. This is the last island that kept a Dutch name from its colonial past. Discover the island’s historical sites and deserted beaches at your leisure.

The following day, explore Kachchaitivu a small virgin island completely deserted and surrounded by clear turquoise water. The whole day will be yours to enjoy both onland and underwater. On the final day of this amazing journey, take time to snorkel before sailing to the famous Adam’s Bridge, a “bridge” of limestone shoals connecting Sri Lanka with India. Swim and stroll alongthe white banks. Finally, with the fondest of memories, be escorted back to Tailaimannar after indulging in one final scrumptious breakfast in this wonderful city.
