Explore the beautiful Champasak city, the former capital of the country, and make your way to Wat Phu temple, a UNESCO world heritage site known as “the temple of the mountain”. The temple complex dates back to the 6th-13th centuries and is perched on a hill, giving you breathtaking views of the lowlands, tranquil rice paddies, and the mighty Mekong. After this cultural experience, head back to your hotel in Pakse for a great way to end the day.
Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city on Route 9W and pay a visit to the ancient Stupa That Ing Hang, which has been around for 1,500 years. It’s a great way to get a feel for the history and spirituality of the place. Check out the 16th century addition to the stupa and the 9m-tall plaster one, which is believed to be the spot where Buddha gave his famous ‘Lightning Spoken’ speech. After that, make your way to the capital of the province of Khommouane, where you can still see the architecture of the French colonial era. You can end the day with a nice walk along the beautiful riverfront of the Mekong.
Nahin is a stunning spot, tucked away in the tranquil Hinboun Valley surrounded by majestic karst peaks. It’s the perfect spot to start your journey to the Kong Lor Caves – a true Laos treasure. The best part of the day comes when you take a boat ride through the 7-kilometre-long cave, lined with stunning stalactites and towering columns – it’s a natural wonder to behold!
When you get to Savannakhet late in the afternoon, you’ll take a stroll around the old town to get a better idea of its history. You can check out the oldest Buddhist temple in the area – Wat Xayyaphoum – and take in the stunning architecture of the French colonial period, especially around Talat Yen Square and The Deer House in the old town. Don’t miss out on the chance to check out the Art Deco styles represented by Lao Chaloun and Soumpholokdy House, which are a great mix of culture and architecture.
On your last day, you will travel to Pakse, where you will make a stop in Ban Laha Num. Here, the tradition of Phoutai cotton weaving is still practiced in every household, with natural dyes made from bark and leaves.
