APOPO’s HeroRats Visitor’s Centre has soft-opened for visitors. Typical tours last an hour and begin with learning about the lifesaving work being done by trained rats to clear landmines. During the tour, APOPO’s representatives will demonstrate equipment used to work on minefields and a map of an area suspected to be a minefield, along with information on what they found and how. The next display is of real decommissioned mines and UXOs. The final highlight of the tour is a demonstration by two de-miners from APOPO and the famous HeroRats trained to sniff out mines. After the tour, you can visit the café and learn more about APOPO’s work, mine problems in Cambodia and watch informational films related to the subject. There is also a souvenir shop on site.
At present, APOPO has two types of tickets. The first includes all of the activities described above. The second ticket includes the tour described above and also gives you a chance to handle the rats themselves on an artificial minefield wearing full anti-mine protective gear, giving you a chance to understand what mine clearing work is like in action. On top of that, you can go backstage to see where the rats live and take a photo with them. One drink per person will also be included in the café.
