New 1-Day Excursion to Thach That

Share

Embark on a day full of sightseeing and activities in Thach That, a rural destination just a short distance from the city centre of Hanoi. Upon arrival, disembark at a local resort and head off to enjoy a leisurely bicycle tour.

First visit Tay Phuong Pagoda, an ancient Buddhist pagoda with architecture and mosaics dating back to the late 16th Century. The pagoda has been through many renovations and has had its current shape since its 1794 renovation during the reign of Tay Son. Climb up the 237 steps to the top of Cau Lau Hill and be amazed by the three-level structure that houses the finest collection of wooden statues in Vietnam, a precious national treasure. Carved from jackfruit wood, these statues depict Vietnamese farmers with lively expressions and delicately carved outfits.

Descending from the hill, visit a family who lives just a stone’s throw away and are known for producing bamboo dragonflies, a popular local souvenir. Here you will have a chance to spend time with these craftspeople and assemble and decorate your own dragonfly souvenir.

Leaving the pagoda, visit Chang Son village, a famous carpentry village which is also known for producing paper fans. Spend some time with local artisans, and, if you wish, you can also try your hand at making one of the delicate paper fans.

The next stop will be at Phung Xa village to visit the former home of a high ranking court mandarin, a great poet upon whom a Ming dynasty Emperor conferred a doctor laureate title during his ambassadorship in China.

An optional add-on to this trip is the Quintessence of the Tonkin show at Baara Land.
